News Detox

From Wayne Wood:

Being away for a few days at the beach changes anybody’s perspective, I guess, but I would guess that the effect may be magnified for people in the news business. Normally I get two daily newspapers, subscribe to 15 or 20 magazines, see a little television news most days, and at least graze dozens of news websites weekly.

At the beach: nada.

Didn’t read the paper, didn’t watch the news, never looked at the laptop. “News” was defined as finding something interesting on the beach.

It feels good for a few days.

And then, I’m back reading the New York Times and Rolling Stone and seeing what Slate and the Huffington Post are up to. The gears have shifted again.
